Early Departure from Camp?

For liability reasons and everyone’s safety, if your camper plans to leave camp earlier than Thursday at 1:00 PM or only attend for 1-3 days, the camp director, Jim Detjen, must be notified of any such arrangements/plans and release your camper to you.

Please email jim@detjengroup.com or text/call Jim at (801) 455-7269 to notify him.

What to bring to camp?

Please label your name on all belongings.

  • Your own basketball (be sure to use a permanent marker to label)

  • At least six pairs of athletic socks

  • At least four t-shirts

  • Each camper is responsible for bringing his own linens and towels, we recommend:

    • Sheets (twin, extra-long) or sleeping bag

    • Pillow and pillowcase

  • For campers who need to carry medication with them throughout the camp day, we recommend a string backpack labeled clearly with the camper’s name.

  • RECOMMENDED: Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, swimsuit, jacket, weather-appropriate clothing, and footwear, spending money, camera

Day Campers

Day Campers participate in the same activities as boarding (Overnighter) campers except for staying overnight in the dorms.

  • Commuter Day Campers are expected to arrive at Loftin Lewis Student Center cafeteria each day between 8:00 and 8:15 am and to be picked up after the evening program which ends at approximately 9:00 pm. Commuter Day Campers must check-in each morning and check-out with an adult each evening at the Manager's Stand in the Student Center cafeteria. If the camper does not check-in or out, the camp will place phone calls to the camper's home and emergency phone numbers until the camper is located.

All Day Campers are not permitted in the dorms.

Teams

Our primary goal in forming camp teams is to ensure balanced competition. Teams are assigned based on date of birth and height and are adjusted by our coaching staff during evaluation games on the first day. We do not honor team assignment requests. We kindly ask that you do not make this request when camp begins.

Security

Only campers and Wasatch Academy Basketball Camp staff are permitted in the cafeteria and dormitories. The exterior doors are locked and accessible only through key-card access. Individual rooms are secured with key-card access and the campers have these keys. They are able to lock the rooms from the inside at night. In the dorms, there is at least one camp dorm parent and a medical trainer on campus. The campus is monitored by Wasatch Academy Security just as it is during the school year.

Athletic Trainers

We have certified athletic trainers available around the clock during camp including in each of the gymnasiums in which camp activities are taking place and overnight in the dorms. Our athletic trainers will be available during check-in to answer any questions you may have about your camper's medical care.

Visitors

For security reasons, visitors are not allowed in the dormitories except for during check-in and check-out. Additionally, visitors are not allowed in the cafeteria.

Discipline

Coach Peterson, his staff, and Wasatch Academy have a zero tolerance policy on bullying. All campers are expected to conform to this and all standards of behavior established by the camp director. Disruptive behavior could result in dismissal.

Roommates / rooms.

Rooms

Overnight campers stay in Wasatch Academy student dorms. The dorms we use DO have WiFi available and ARE air-conditioned.

Overnight campers are only permitted to return to their dorm rooms during lunch time and at the end of the camp day. Day campers are not permitted in the dormitories.

Keys

Key-cards for room, dorm, and building access are issued at check-in. If you lose your key, you will be charged $15 to replace.

Roommates

The rooms available for our camp's use are double-occupancy. We do not have triple-occupancy rooms available so, unfortunately, will not be able to meet requests for triple rooms.

Roommate requests by emailing the camp director, Jim Detjen, at jim@detjengroup.com (please try to ensure spelling accuracy so we can easily locate the roommate on our roster).

If two campers request one another and are both successfully registered at the time roommate assignments are made, the request will be met. If you have made the roommate request via the online registration form, there is no need to also submit it via email. Our goal is to meet every roommate request but requests are not guaranteed.

If no roommate request is made, your camper will be assigned a double room with another camper in his age group – in addition, he will be placed on a hall with other campers his age and, most often, with other campers on his camp team. We assign rooms based on age (by birthday), placing our youngest campers in the dorms closest to the MPB.

Meals / food.

Meals

For both Overnight and Day Campers, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the on-campus cafeteria, the Loftin Lewis Student Center. There are a wide variety of healthy and delicious food options offered at each meal. This facility is peanut-free (with exception of individually packaged peanut butter).

The first meal served at in Camp is lunch on check-in day and the last meal is lunch on check-out day. Snacks and beverages may be purchased from the concession stand located in Loftin Lewis Student Center either by Venmo or cash. Campers are welcome to have non-perishable snacks and drinks in their dorm rooms but the rooms are not equipped with refrigerators.

The Loftin Lewis Student Center cafeteria is staffed by the same company that serves Wasatch Academy Students throughout the school year so they are very much accustomed to accommodating various dietary restrictions / food allergies.

Dietary Restrictions / Food Allergies

Should your camper have any dietary restrictions and/or food allergies that you feel should be brought to our attention, let us know in advance on the online registration form.

The form has fields for the type of restriction / allergy and the procedure our camp staff should follow in case a reaction occurs at camp. We also ask that those campers and their families visit with our camp medical training staff at check-in so that they can discuss, in detail, the condition and any specific concerns. If the camper has an epi-pen for emergency use, we ask that you bring one for us to have in the camp training room and we also ask that the camper bring along a string backpack clearly labeled with his name so that he can carry the epi-pen with him as he goes from place-to-place on campus.

Lastly, please feel free to contact our staff at jim@detjengroup.com if you have additional questions or concerns regarding the cafeteria.

Check-in and check-out day FAQs.

CHECK-IN WILL RUN FROM 10:00 AM-11:30 AM ON THE FIRST DAY OF CAMP IN THE MPB. IF YOU ARRIVE AFTER 4:00 PM, PLEASE COME TO THE CAMP OFFICE TO CHECK-IN.

PLEASE READ THROUGH THE BELOW AS IT ANSWERS OUR MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED CHECK-IN-DAY QUESTIONS:

Check-in

Onsite check-in is Monday at 10 am for both Overnighters and Day Campers. Orientation and lunch follows.

Check-out

All campers must be checked out and picked up by 2:00 pm on the last day of camp. If you are flying out of Salt Lake City International Airport, ground transportation will be arranged by the camp staff. Please note that airport transfers are an additional $100 fee (roundtrip) arranged the week prior to camp. Email us to book an airport transfer(s) by clicking here.

On the last day of camp, check-out will take place for Overnight campers down at their dorms and for day campers in the Managers' Stand in the Student Center cafeteria. Parents should arrange a meeting place with their campers prior to check-out (we recommend the east parking lot of the MPB). Boarding campers will be required to have their rooms inspected and to turn in their room keys prior to departure. If you lose your key, you will be charged $15 at check-out.

Do I need to bring a health form with me?

The only medical information we require is the answers to the medical questions and the health insurance information collected on our online registration form. There is also a liability release and permission to treat you which you would have had to agree as a part of the online registration process. No additional health/physical form is required.

What do I do if my child has an allergy, medication to take, or other medical condition that I would like to discuss with your camp's medical personnel?

Our camp training staff, headed up by our head Wasatch Academy National Basketball team trainer will have a table set up during check-in. They are there to discuss any of your camper's medical concerns including allergies and the administration of medication. They will also collect medications to be administered at that time.

What size of sheets do I need to bring?

Extra-long twin sheets (the standard in college dormitories) will work best. Some campers prefer to bring sleeping bags and sleep inside them on top of the bed. Don't forget your camper's pillow and towels, either.

Can I help my camper move into his or her dorm? What is the best place to park for unloading?

Yes, parents and family are welcome to help their campers get set up in the dorms on check-in day and to help them get moved out on the last day of camp. There will be camp signage directing you to parking.

How does supervision work in the dormitories?

There is at least one dorm coach staying in the camp dormitories. These dorm coaches will ensure that all occupants of each room are present in their dorm rooms just prior to lights-out. The dorm coaches will be staying in a room in the dormitory overnight. Each room may be locked from the inside and only the campers have keys to their room (we have access to spare and master keys in case of emergency or lost keys). The campers lock their rooms at night. The exterior doors of the dormitories are also locked with key-card access. Our coaches and staff are the only ones with key cards to the dorms. Our campus is also always monitored by campus security just as it is for our students during the school year.

Will someone wake my camper up in the mornings?

Yes, the dorm coaches will knock on each door in the mornings to be sure that the campers are awake for breakfast.

Can I take my camper off-campus for a meal?

Yes. You are welcome to take your camper off-campus, but you must sign him out at the Managers' Stand in the Student Center cafeteria so that we can verify that he is leaving with a parent or other authorized adult and so that we can make note for any camp attendance check that he may miss.

Can I join my camper in the cafeteria or the dorms?

No, we cannot allow parents or family members in the cafeteria or in the dorms after move-in. Only our campers and our coaches and camp personnel are allowed in the cafeteria and dorms with our campers. Parents and family members will be allowed back in the dorms to assist their campers during check-out.

Will my camper be able to go back to his dorm room during the day?

Campers are able to go back to their dormitories once during the day, during lunch. After that, the next time they will be back in their dorms is at night after the evening program.

Can my camper bring his cell phone or iPod around camp during the day?

We do not have restrictions against cell phones and iPods at camp. However, we strongly recommend that these devices be left locked in the dorm rooms during the day. Cell phones and iPods are not permitted to be used during camp lectures, stations or games so the time that the device could be used is limited. Additionally, we have had many instances of such devices being misplaced during camp days.

Which Wasatch Academy players will be around camp during my session?

All of our current players from the 2024-25 National team will serve as guest coaches and referees for camp games. So you can certainly expect to see some familiar Wasatch Academy Basketball faces.

What about NBA or other professional athletes?

Guest athletes will be on-site conducting lectures, instructing, interacting with campers, and demonstrating basketball drills. Wasatch Academy Basketball will not be responsible for lost or stolen signed or unsigned items and paraphernalia.

How will I know where and when to pick up my camper on the last day of camp?

There is no set location to pick up your camper on the last day. What we typically recommend is that you make arrangements with your camper to meet up and check out on the last day of camp after 2:00 pm.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to email our staff at jim@detjengroup.com.
